ST MARY DE CASTRO, LEICESTER

INTO THE NEW MILLENNIUM
ST MARY DE CASTRO is a witness to Leicester’s faith in
times past and present. For its architectural merit the church is a Grade I
Listed Building, of national significance and international importance. This is
a matter of pride to anyone who knows and loves the church, but also a
responsibility to maintain and preserve for future generations.
The antiquity which is part of the beauty of the church today
is also, in a sense, a threat. With age come the ravages of time - not
necessarily wholesale destruction, but the insidious and unseen processes which
loosen a stone here, eat away at a beam there, until the whole structure becomes
unsound.
For centuries, the care of the building has rested on the
congregation. Many of their monuments are to be seen on the church walls, in its
stained glass and several of its ornaments. Descendants of those who first built
the church - many of them unknown - have ensured its survival to our own times.
Today, members of the congregation regularly travel, often for considerable
distances, to worship and support various activities. For
future generations to experience the pleasure, wonder, and above all the peace,
of this ancient building, is the responsibility of all who care about our
heritage, of whatever creed or persuasion.
In 2007, St Mary de Castro will be 900 years old.
The Friend’s Appeal - Challenge 900 - is a
major fund raising effort for the immediate needs of the church fabric. It aims
to provide additional income for regular maintenance, upkeep, and development in
the future. Our Patron and Sponsors supporting this campaign recognize that St
Mary de Castro, by simply being there, gives our children and theirs a
richer and better world. Many who have had the joy of welcoming young people
from all backgrounds to experience the effect of its presence in this
multicultural city, will testify to this
We have inherited the work of the past.
We seek your help for upkeep and maintenance in the present.
We ask you to help secure its preservation and renewal in the
future.
